Let’s meet the new SoMu generation!

For three weeks already, the third-generation SoMus have been exploring Kaunas and studying. How are they feeling here? How are they enjoying SoMu?

Angelica from Italy chose SoMu after her BA in Translation and Liaison Interpreting. She chose SoMu because of her interest to investigate how languages influence society, and how people behave in a multilingual environment. The possibility to study in three different universities was also an influencial factor. ‘There is no better thing than learning languages and cultures while travelling and experiencing new education systems, too,‘ Angelica thinks.

Karen from Germany got interested in the connection between politics, civil society, and language while writing her BA thesis about the Regional Minority Language of her home-town, Koblenz, in the context of European language policies. Karen is glad that SoMu is the perfect option as it combines everything she loves: language and society, a focus on Scandinavia and the Baltics, and travelling.

Two more SoMus from Germany, Magdalena and Thomas, chose this programme because of their interest in languages, cultures, and sociolinguistics.

The students are enjoying each other’s company as well as the first classes. ‘The courses are really interesting. It seems it’s going to be three very intensive months,’ SoMus claim.

How are they feeling in Kaunas? ‘The atmosphere in Kaunas is very warm and welcoming. It‘s a beautiful and interesting city,‘ Karen and Magdalena think. Thomas admits that first he was unimpressed by the city by his opinion changed very fast, ‘There are so many lovely details about Kaunas, that I even don't know where to start. Wherever you want to go, you can get there quite fast; there are a lot of parks and free spaces throughout the city to enjoy.’ ‘I do suggest students to come here to Lithuania to challenge themselves in an unconventional destination, but still mysterious and fascinating,‘ Angelica adds.
