Application Procedure

The application procedure is coordinated by VMU International Cooperation Department.

Required documents for admission to SoMu:

  • On-line application form;
  • High School certificate;
  • Bachelor / Master degree diploma and its supplement (transcript of records / mark sheet) in the original language and translated into English (if not in Lithuanian or German); the document in the original language needs to be officially approved  by “Apostille” (for citizens of countries acceding to the 1961 Hague Convention) or certified by another officially recognized body, and the translation has to be approved by a notary;
  • Curriculum vitae (in English);
  • Motivation letter;
  • Copy of your passport or other document of identification;
  • Copy of document showing paid application fee of 100 EUR (where the name of the applicant and the date of payment are indicated);
  • Recent passport size photos (3 x 4 cm) (you will upload them to the application form on-line);
  • Document of health insurance and its copy (at a later stage, for admitted students only);
  • Exmatrikulationsbescheinigung (only for students who have been registered before at a university in Germany).
  • Students from non-partner universities are asked to provide a proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.);
  • Letter of concurrence.

* All application documents (scanned) must be submitted on-line or arrive (by regular mail, if it is stated so in on-line application) at the VMU International Cooperation Department by the application deadline and must be either in English, German or Lithuanian. The translation (to English) must be certified by a Notary. Please note that incomplete or late applications will not be processed.

How to Pay the Application Fee
The application fee 100 EUR (not refundable) should be paid before sending the application documents. Bank transfers can be sent directly from your bank to Vytautas Magnus University’s bank account.

For International Students
Temporary Residence Permit and Entry Visa
Students who are EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA citizens entering Lithuania must have valid passports or ID cards. EU/EEA citizens are required to apply for a Certificate confirming the right of a citizen of a European Union member state of temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania if they stay for more than 90 days. They can obtain a Temporary Residence Permit for studies in Lithuania at the Kaunas Migration Office after having arrived in Kaunas, for a period not longer than one year.
All students who are non-EU / EEA citizens must obtain a residence permit from the nearest Lithuanian embassy or consulate in their home country. It is also important to check if a visa is also required to enter the Schengen area.

Required documents for Migration Department

For EU Citizens to get a Certificate confirming the right of a citizen of a European Union member state of temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania to stay and study in Lithuania:
- Online application form (www.migracija.lt);
- Passport (or ID card) and its copy (last page with a photograph);
- Student status confirmation (provided by VMU Student Center);
- Bank statement (with the amount 3852 (321 Eur /1 month) Eur per year) If the account is not in Lithuanian bank, the statement should be In English or translated into Lithuanian;
- Document of health insurance and its copy (after admission);
- Payment cheque for a Certificate confirming the right of a citizen of a European Union member state of temporary residence in the Republic of Lithuania (8.60 Eur).

Some common documents for other countries citizens to obtain a (D) type Visa to come and study in Lithuania (for a full list of documents needed, check the website of the relevant embassy):
- Passport (or ID card) and its copy (last page with a photograph);
- online application form (available on the website of the relevant embassy);
- 1 photo (size: 34x45mm);
- An official mediation letter from the university (provided by VMU International Cooperation Department)

- A health insurance with Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage (must be valid until the visa expires in Schengen Area, must cover not less than 30 000 EUR)

- Bank statement ( with the amount 3852 Eur per year);
- Payment check for visa 120 Eur.
